Brazil's fractured party system is poised to gain yet another appendage with the creation of the Partido da Democracia Brasileira (PDB) to accommodate the current mayor of São Paulo, Gilberto Kassab, who is defecting from the right-of-centre opposition Democratas (DEM). Significantly, Kassab is recruiting members from other parties to join the PDB, leading the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo to call it “the bus party, to which anyone and everyone is welcome to come or go".
